Does this passage not imply that there will be a long stretch of disobedience and chastisement before they will return to God and obey His voice?

"For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God."
Deuteronomy 4:24

"[Moses] gave this command to the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord: 'Take this Book of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. There it will remain as a witness against you'".
Deuteronomy 31:26

The Bible is unique in that it rarely hides the flaws of those who grace it's pages.
